Activities

Field Visit (10 May 2007 - 6 May 2008)

This group of 61 cleits extends across the flat summit of Mullach Geal to either side of the road leading up to the radar station. The cleits are spread over an area measuring 380m from NNE to SSW by 100m transversely, running from NF 09138 99456 in the SSW to NF 09291 99806 in the NNE, with a cluster of thirteen in the ESE (Hirta 589-601). Of the group only eight remain roofed with remnants of their turf caps, twenty-seven retain one or more of their roof lintels, seventeen are now roofless and ruinous, and a further nine have been reduced to grass grown mounds or footings. The external faces of many of these cleits are made up of small stones and on plan their downslope ends are relatively square.
