Archaeology Notes

NS06NW 102 03633 67500

Upper Ettrick is a working farmsteading comprising a mixture of 19th and 20th century buildings and sheds, none of which has been recorded in detail. A farmstead is depicted at approximately this location on Roy’s Military Map (1747-55), a mid-18th century estate map (Foulis 1758-9) and Mackinlay’s map of North Bute (1823). The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire and Buteshire 1869, Sheet CXCIII) depicts three roofed buildings here, but the 2nd edition of the 25-inch map (1897, Sheet CXCIII) shows that the steading had been extended before the end of the 19th century. The 3rd edition of the 25-inch map (1924, Sheet CXCIII.16) depicts two horse-engines that are not shown on earlier maps.
