Archaeology Notes

NS06NE 171 0756 6871.

This disused factory stands at the edge of improved fields about 430m SE of Ardmaleish farmsteading and comprises one roofed shed and areas of hard standing. Two large ponds are depicted in this position on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire and Buteshire 1869, CXCIV), but by the time of the OS 2nd edition 25-inch map they were partly filled in and two buildings had been constructed (Buteshire 1897, CXCIV.SW). Six buildings, annotated 'Bute Lobster Fishery', are shown on the 3rd edition of the OS 25-inch map, surveyed in 1915 (Argyllshire and Buteshire 1924, Sheet CXCIV.SW).
