Field Visit (2008)

NC37SE 16 35687 70431

The mangled and rusting remains of steel A-frame, the footings of which have been secured by a low spread of boulders, are situated on the crest of the N flank of Beinne an Duibhe, a rocky massif on the W side of the Kyle of Durness which comprises a series of knolls and ridges interspersed with wet, peaty ground. The structure, which faced NE towards the sea and appears to have supported a large sheet of metal about 1.7m in breadth, was probably either a target or a direction indicator for offshore gunnery practice or aerial bombing runs associated with the target area centred on Eilean nan Caorach (NC36SE 15).
