Archaeology Notes (21 March 1995)

A possible souterrain was unearthed at Greenbank Cottage during excavation work for a water pipe.

In 1840 a heap of stones on the opposite side of the road to Greenbank Cottage was all that remained of a large cairn which covered the line of the road and the area of the cottage and its offices. About 1820 the excavation for the foundations of the cottage revealed a human skull within a stone cist.

Greenbank Cottage is at NO 1742 4481. There is no trace of the cairn in the area.

No visible remains of this cairn were noted on the date of visit.

Publication Account (1995)

NO 1742 4480 A possible souterrain was uncovered during renovation work at Greenbank Cottage, Blairgowrie. drainage work dislodged a large slab giving limited visual access to a stone-lined chamber. A coin of Hadrian (NO14SE 4) was found in the immediate vicinity, before 1840, and a burial cairn is also known to have been very close by.
