Not to be confused with NO14SE 55.

A small island in the centre of which is an oblong hollow surrounded with a dyke or rampart of stones and earth. Traces of a building were still visible in 1843. Traditionally stated to have been a place of refuge and/or centre of smuggling activity. The name Stormont (Store-mount) is supposed to refer to the storing of valuables in times of peril.

Activities

Field Visit (6 March 1969)

According to the farmer, Mr.C.Howe, of Lochside, all that remains on the island is a rubble mound. Temporarily by-passed until a boat is available. Visited by OS (RD), 6 March 1969.
