Desk Based Assessment (5 September 2017)
Nothing now remains of the dock basin at Cartsburn Shipyard. Rectangular on plan and measuring 200m by 53m transversely, it lay perpendicular to the S bank of the River Clyde. The shipyard (NS27NE 449) was owned from 1883 by Scott’s Shipbuilding and Engineering Company. Between 1900 and 1912 the firm undertook an extensive programme of modernisation of the former Steele wood yard, building this large basin, which was served by a 120 ton crane, as well as new workshops and handling and storage facilities (Kane and Gillen 2012: 51). These changes can be seen between the 2nd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Renfrewshire 1896, Sheet 002.06) and the 3rd edition of the OS 25-inch map (Renfrewshire 1914, Sheet 002.06).
