Archaeology Notes

NO12NW 31 107 280

(Area: NO 107 280) Cropmarks. A dark circular mark on this photograph also appears on one taken by Crawford. He suggests that it probably marks the ditch of a round cairn or mound of the Bronze Age and he refers to the nearby find of urns etc. (NO12NW 15)

(Visible on J K St Joseph air photograph Q.78, flown 1 August 1946).

O G S Crawford 1949.

Activities

Field Visit (16 October 1963)

Nothing seen on the ground.

Visited by OS (WDJ) 16 October 1963.

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (15 November 1993)

A series of prominent curvilinear cropmarks have been recorded on aerial photographs of the E gate of Grassy Walls Roman Temporary camp (NO12NW 8). The majority of the markings are probably of natural origin but, on some of the photographs, traces of an arc of ditch can be detected within the largest of the natural curvilinear features. A concentration of probable pits is also visible at this location, while other pits are scattered across the rest of the field.

Information from RCAHMS (SH) 15 November 1993.
