Field Visit (17 October 1963)
NO 1956 2605. A grassy mound, 3.0m high with a diameter of c.20.0m and surmounted by a Trig. pillar. Probing revealed that the mound is of basically stony construction. It appears to be undisturbed.
Visited by OS (R D L) 17 October 1963.
Field Visit (1 August 1989)
Situated on the summit of Pole Hill, within a plantation bank (NO12NE 33) and surmounted by an OS triangulation pillar, there is an undisturbed cairn which displays three phases of construction; each phase is represented by a distinct tier of mound material which is separated from those above or below by a berm up to 0.9m broad. The lowest tier measures 19.5m in diameter by about 0.6m in height, the central tier 13m by about 1m high, and the uppermost tier 7m by about 0.6m. Stony material is visible on the surface of the cairn, and an earth-fast stone on the S arc may have formed part of a kerb.
At the base of the cairn on the SE there is what may be a roughly square platform measuring about 2.8m across and 0.2m in height; around its edge there is an intermittent kerb of small boulders.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 1 August 1989.
Measured Survey (1 August 1989)
RCAHMS surveyed the cairn at Pole Hill (NO12NE 6) with plane-table and alidade on 1 August 1989 at a scale of 1:125. The resultant plan was redrawn in ink and published at a scale of 1:250 (RCAHMS 1994b, 16).
