The Church at Dron was built in 1826 but obviously there was an earlier church here, as a grave of 1679 is mentioned as having been dug just outside the churchyard.
Name Book 1860.
The former parish church of Dron stood within its burial-ground on a terrace at the top of the steep scarp forming the N side of the gully of the Dron Burn. The present building, which dates from 1826, is disused and, although still roofed, is in a state of considerable disrepair.
The burial-ground, which is enclosed by a rubble and mortar wall, contains monuments dating from the seventeenth century onwards, including two eccentrically carved boulders on the NE side of the church. The oldest stone noted on the date of visit is a slab of 1648, on the S side of the church, which bears a mill rind, hammer and chisel. The headstone of Mr John Welwood, a Covenanting minister who died in Perth in 1679 is in the SE corner of the graveyard. Dron was granted to Arbroath as a chapel of Abernethy in the late 12th century, and had achieved parochial status by the 16th century.
Visited by RCAHMS (JRS, IF), 27 November 1996.
NSA 1845; I B Cowan 1967.
