Scope and Content Curious grave monument, Parish Church and Churchyard, Dron, Perth & Kinross Natural objects which form unusual shapes have long been prized for their decorative or magical properties. It is impossible to say when this stone was placed here, but the other monuments around it date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The patterns are created when softer, sandy layers in the rock erode quicker than harder bands of stone, creating this unusual banded effect. Marking burial places with a stone memorial is an ancient practice. The stone allows those left behind to have a focal point for their grieving and helps to keep the memory of the dead person alive. Stone is the most durable of materials for this purpose, and, once inscribed, allows personal details to be recorded which allow us to glimpse the lives of those long dead in our present times. This strangely-shaped piece of rock has been used to mark a grave in the churchyard, in place of a formally-carved gravestone. It is one of three such naturally-eroded sandstone cones used in this way at this site. These distinctive stones are also to be found as ornaments on gate posts in the area.
