Desk Based Assessment (1 September 2017)
Nothing now remains of the pier that extended 120m north from the submarine mining station that lay immediately east of and partly occupied the coastal battery site of Fort Matilda (NS27NE 40) at Whiteforeland Point, Greenock. It is depicted on the 1895 plan of Fort Matilda (National Archives: WO78/2443/03) with a Fog Bell House standing at north end of the pier. The 1: 1250 OS Town plan of Greenock (1965, Sheet NS2577NE) shows a ‘T’ shaped extension to the end of the pier, with fog signal house and crane.
