Activities

Measured Survey (16 July 1987)

RCAHMS surveyed the shieling at Gleann Taitneach on 16 July 1987 at a scale of 1:500 with self-reducing alidade and plane-table. The plan was redrawn in ink and published at a scale of 1:1000 (RCAHMS 1990, Fig. 274.11).

Field Visit (3 March 1987)

On a grass-covered terrace, high up on the W side of Gleann Taitneach (at 500m OD), there are the remains of a shieling comprising two well-preserved buildings (A,B), two enclosures and a turf-built hut (C). The terrace has a water-supply and serves as a fine vantage point over the glen.

The larger of the two buildings (A) is round-ended, of two compartments and measures 7.7m from NNW to SSE by 3.1m transversely over drystone walls 0.8m in thickness and 0.9m in height in six courses; the end-walls are battered and the entrance is off-centre in the E wall. The partition wall is 1.2m high in 8 courses and a drainage-hood extends the length of the W wall. Terraced into the slope at the SSE end of the building, there is a pen (3.5m by 2.5m internally).

The second building (B), 7m to the N, is also round-ended, and of two compartments (6.0m from NNE to SSW by 3.3m transversely over drystone walls 0.8m thick and up to 1m high in 6 courses). The end-walls are battered and the entrance is in the E wall; the partition-wall (0.9m high in 8 courses) may, in common with that for building A, have served as a central pillar in support of the roof.

At the foot of the boulder scree 23m to the NW there is an enclosure (C), which has been subdivided (13.4m from WNW to ESE by 8.5m transversely internally), and on its SE side there are the remains of what may be a subrectangular building (6m from WSW to ENE by 2m within boulder walls up to 0.7m thick and 1m high).

About 13m to the SW of building A there is a roughly oval enclosure (D), which measures 11m from WNW to ESE by 10.5m transversely within walls up to 1m in thickness and 0.5m in height.

On a slight knoll 44m to the SE there are the remains of a turf-built hut (8m from NNW to SSE by 4.4m transversely within spread walls up to 0.2m high).
