Activities

Field Visit (17 January 1975)

NO05SE 7 0723 5126.

At NO 0723 5126 on a small isolated rise are two hut circles.

'A' measures 11.0m in diameter between wall centres, with an entrance gap in the WSW.

'B' is 10.0m in diameter between wall centres, with an entrance gap in the SSE.

There is no evidence of contemporary cultivation in the immediate vicinity, but about 300 metres SW is a small isolated area of stone clearance heaps. (See NO 05 SE 28)

Surveyed at 1:10 000.

Field Visit (2 July 1987)

A pair of hut-circles is situated on a knoll low down the S flank of Rie Meikle, some 400m NE of the shore of Loch Benachally.

1. NO 0721 5125 The larger hut-circle lies on the summit of the knoll and measures 8.2m in diameter within a stony bank 2m in thickness and 0.2m in height internally. A ring of boulders protruding through the heather along the outer edge of the bank probably represent in situ and displaced facing-stones. The entrance is probably on the SE.

2. NO 0723 5125 The second hut-circle, which lies 10m to the ESE, measures about 7m in diameter within a stony bank about 1.8m in thickness and no more than 0.2m in height. The position of the entrance is probably marked by a dip in the crest of the bank on the SE.
