Archaeology Notes

HY43SE 4 4757 3259.

At HY 4757 3259, on Kili Holm, is a cairn, visible as a turf-covered stony mound 17.0m in diameter and 1.5m high, with a modern marker cairn erected over its centre. The cairn is undisturbed, though several slabs protrude through the turf at various angles forming no intelligible pattern. Its character and size suggest that it is probably chambered.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Visited by OS(ISS) 25 May 1973.

(A: HY 4757 3259; B: HY 4763 3265) Chambered Cairns (NR) (For 'B', see HY43SE 6.)

Activities

Field Visit (May 1981)

Arrangement of slabs makes no sense as chambered tomb. The

slab-settings especially around the S edge are more suggestive of

a settlement complex, possibly rather later in date than the

other prehistoric house on the island.

Information from Orkney SMR (RGL) May 81, OR 778.

Field Visit (May 1981)

HY 4757 3259 HY43SE 4

Beneath the cairn at the centre of the islet, is a stony mound 17m in diameter and 1.5m high with several protruding edge-slabs. Although it has been interpreted as a chambered tomb, this is probably a prehistoric house.
