Archaeology Notes

HY51SW 10.04 54170 11753 and 53984 11942

Two shuttered concrete searchlight emplacements are situated on the E and W side of the main gun site. That to the W (HY 53984 11942), is situated overlooking a topographical feature shown on the OS 1:2500 digital map as 'Grunkeys Geo' about 97m SE of the Battery Observation tower (HY51SW 10.02).

Built on a raised concrete platform the emplacement faces NE, has a concrete canopy and is entered from the S by a flight of concrete steps. The searchlight is shown as No.2 on the PRO layout plan (WO 192/264).

The searchlight emplacement on the E side of the battery (HY 54170 11753), is built on a low concrete platform, has a concrete canopy with the entrance to the S. The mounting faces E and is shown as No.1 Searchlight on the PRO layout plan (WO 192/264).
