(Centred NO 058 245) Crop-marks - small enclosures and linear features. Good illustration on narrow-window visibility.
Visible on J K St Joseph air photographs AGH 40.
Two penannular ring-ditches are visible as cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs and are situated in a field on the S side of a dismantled railway about 450m to the NE of Marlefield Farm. The larger ring-ditch measures about 8m in diameter within a broad ditch with an entrance causeway on the E, and is plotted as a possible Class I henge on a distribution map of henge monuments, ring-cairns, pit-circles and recumbent stone circles covering central and eastern Scotland (RCAHMS 1994, 39, fig. A). The second ring-ditch, which lies immediately to the SW, is about 4m in internal diameter and is open to the NW. A single pit visible within each ring-ditch may indicate that they enclose barrows, and there is a scatter of pits in the vicinity, most notably to the SE.
Information from RCAHMS (ARG) 17 October 1997.
