Archaeology Notes

NO01NW 14 00782 19924

(NO 0079 1992) Roman Signal Station (R)

OS 6" map, (1959)

Excavated by Christison, when the ditch and outer bank had been recently destroyed by ploughing but an inner rampart, a unique feature, survived. Four post-holes were found in the interior.

St Joseph air photographs (GG 72, U75) show the work ploughed out, with the ditch as a crop-mark.

D Christison 1901; A L F Rivet 1965.

This signal station has been destroyed by cultivation.

Revised at 1/2500. Re-sited to NO 0078 1992.

Visited by OS (E G C) 16 November 1965.

On the date of visit, nothing was visible of this watch tower in a relatively flat field of grass.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 8 November 1995.
