(NN 8669 2066) Stayt of Crieff (NR) (Site of)

OS 6" map (1938)

A low mound, some 12 yards in diameter and at one time surrounded by a wall of earth and stone, stood on the south side of the road about 330 yards east of the entrance to Broich.

Until 1665 it was on this mound that the court of the Earls of Strathearn and the stewards was held. It was apparently first recorded in 1358 and the name 'Stayt' is mentioned in 1475.

When the mound was levelled in 1860 (Strathearn Herald, 17 and 24 November 1860 and 8 December 1860) three deposits of bones, some of them cremated, were found, two of which were each in a short cist. One of the cists also contained a Food Vessel, which is now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland [NMAS] (Accession no. EE 103).

M Headrick 1914; OSA 1793

Ploughing has removed all trace of this mound. No further information was discovered.
