Field Visit (29 September 1996 - 26 March 1997)
NN81NE 55 8620 1884
Cropmarks on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1986) reveal a penannular ring-ditch (EARNAP 96, NN 8620 1884) in the corner of a field to the S of Bennybeg Craig. On the date of visit the field was under improved grass and the ring-ditch (EARN96 303) was visible as a vegetation mark. It measured 12.3m in diameter within a ditch 1.8m in breadth and a clearly defined gap was visible on the E. The cropmarks reveal the presence of three pits ranged across the interior on the axis of the entrance; these may well be grave-pits, and the ring-ditch perhaps marks the site of a barrow.
Some 15m to the E of the barrow there is an elongated pit which may also be a grave (EARNAP 100, NN 8622 1884). An interrupted ditch (EARNAP 98) extends along the S side of Bennybeg Craig, possibly cutting across the N end of what may be a square barrow (EARNAP 97, NN 8624 1885); the barrow measures about 5m across and may contain a central burial-pit. To the SSE of the square barrow there are at least four small pits and two larger pits (EARNAP 99) of unknown function.

This ring-ditch, which is visible as a cropmark on oblique aerial photographs, lies at the foot of the SW end of Bennybeg Craig about 120m to the NE of Bennybeg cottage. It measures about 10m in diameter and has an entrance on the E. It is plotted as a possible Class I henge on a distribution map of henge monuments, ring-cairns, pit-circles and recumbent stone circles covering central and eastern Scotland (RCAHMS, 39, fig.A).
