Archaeology Notes

NJ06SE 29.06 07031 62477

A possible type J aircraft hangar is situated at the SE end of the arc of three 'C' type sheds (NJ06SE29.05). These were designed by the Air Ministry and built by Sir William Arol & Co. for aircraft maintenance.

The hangar is shown on the current OS 1:2500 scale digital maps.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), January 2004

A J type aircraft hangar modified both externally and internally. The floor has been repainted and internal alterations inlcude two raised platforms.

It is not known if the construction of this hangar was contemporary witht he C types or slightly later.

The J type shed was designed by the Air Ministry Directorate of Works and were built by Sir William Arrol & Co (Francis 1996). Almost exactly the same design as the K type, the difference being that the J type had lifting tackle the width of the span.
