21 March 1851, MARIA, of Dram (R.C.G. Drahm), Brig, 125 ton, 7 men. Drahm to Leith, wind ESE force 6 or 7, thick, 2.30 pm, half tide, vessel age 90 total loss, insured in Norway, cargo all saved. Place - In St. Andrews Bay. Drove from her anchors on to the Main and went to pieces. Mistook Fifeness for St. Abb's Head, and neglecting to keep the lead going when standing towards the Tay Bank. Lights could not be seen on account of thickness of weather. Crew saved by St. Andrews life-boat. Cargo and stores saved. Matthias Westlye = Master; Madame M.C. Schwarthy = owner. Return of Coastguard Officers. Lloyds List 24 March 1851. Shipping and Mercantile Gazette 24 March 1851.
