(NN 7344 0036) Chapel (NR) (Ruins)

OS 6" map, Ist edition, (1863).

The chapel, of which the eastern gable and part of the walls remain, is one of six erected by Robert the Bruce to commemorate the victory of Bannockburn.

Name Book 1863.

A mausoleum has been erected at the site. An inscription over the doorway states that it incorporates the east gable of the chapel of St. Fillan (but see NS79NW 11) which was in ruins in 1568. The east wall of the mausoleum is certainly older than the remainder of the building. It is 0.7m thick and covered with ivy.

Visited by OS (JLD) 26 May 1953 and (WDJ) 22 October 1969.

St Fillan's Chapel NN 734 003 NN70SW 13

This chapel is said to have been built in the early 14th century. It was converted into a mausoleum in the 19th century, and the E wall may be the only part of the original chapel to survive. An inscription over the door states that the chapel was in ruins in 1568.
