Archaeology Notes

NN70SE 43 7565 0140

Aerial photography has revealed the cropmarks of what may be a long barrow situated on the edge of a terrace to the SE of Ardoch Burn. The principal cropmarks comprise two opposed arcs of ditch (c.4m broad) which form a lens-shaped area measuring 84m from NNE to SSW by a maximum of 33m transversly. Within the area defined by the ditches there are three short dark cropmarks which are aligned with the long axis of the monument. A linear cropmark cuts diagonally across the monument and extends for some distance to the NW and SE; its relationship to the barrow is unknown.

The two arcs of ditch may represent the flanking ditches of a long barrow, now levelled by ploughing, with its wider end, presumably covering the chamber, on the SSW.

Information from RCAHMS (JBS), 9 October 1995

This possible long barrow, the ditches of which have been revealed as cropmarks, have been plotted on a distribution map of long cairns and barrows covering central and eastern Scotland (RCAHMS 1994, 37, fig. A; RCAHMS 1997, 116, fig. 109). A comparable pair of narrow ditches has been discovered at Craighead (NN80NW 39).

Information from RCAHMS (ARG), 6 October 1997.
