(NM 9020 0401) Cairn (NR)
A cairn averaging 4' in height and measuring 94' N-S x 89' E-W, with an internal kerb 66' x 74'6". The kerb and walling are visible 4' high on the E near the burn gully.
A large stone (under which the farm-people believe a horse is buried) projects from the kerb on the W and another shows near the centre. At the NE an intrusive open cist, 4' x 2', axis N-S, lies against or just inside the kerb.
The name of the cairn is Finchairn of Fiana Carn, the latter being used by Gaelic speakers.
M Campbell and M Sandeman 1961-2.
The mutilated remains of a sub-circular, turf-covered cairn 30.0m in diameter and c. 1.0m in height, with traces of later buildings on its flat top. Near its W edge is a stone, 1.3m long, set on edge and at its S edge is an intrusive cist oriented NE-SW and measuring 1.4m x 0.9m x 0.2m. Nothing was seen of an internal kerb.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (WDJ) 10 March 1970.
Field Visit (May 1983)
The cairn situated immediately NE of the farm, though severely robbed, is still 1.2m high and about 24m in diameter (Campbell and Sandeman 1964). Near the edge of the cairn material on the SSE there is a cist, now obscured by a large tree; it measures 1.35m by 0.8m, the S side-slab protruding some 0.4m. The large slab on the W side of the cairn appears to be firmly set; it measures l.55m by 0.3m and stands to a height of 0.6m, but in the absence of excavation its purpose is uncertain. In the NE half there is the foundation of a rectangular structure of no great age.
