OS 6" map, Orkney, 2nd ed.,(1900).

A mound of earth traditionally said to be a burial place.

Name Book 1880.

Nothing is to be seen of this mound.

RCAHMS 1946.

Three barrows, situated in open moorland.

'A' (that published by the OS) is grass-covered, with its top slightly mutilated, and measures c.10.0m in diameter by 0.7m high.

'B' - HY 3784 2032, is heather-covered and slightly mutilated by peat-cutting, and measures c.10.0m in diameter and c.1.0m high.

'C' - HY 3795 2025 - is heather-covered, and measures c.6.0m in diameter by c.0.7m high.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RL), 2 June 1967.

Field Visit (31 March 1994)

Visited during the course of the Orkney Barrows Project, two of the three mounds in this group could not be located. The heather was high and the landscape was distorted by peat cutting, so they may still be present.

Located mound: HY 37840 20320. Bowl-shaped. Measures 10.0 by 10.9m. Height 1.2m. It is prominent from the E on skyline, and visible to the S & W for 1km.

Orkney Smr Note

Tumulus - A mound of earth and traditionally said that some

persons were buried here at one time, 34 chains NE of Bluebersdale

and about 30 chains W of the Castle. [R1]

No trace of mound marked on OS map at 650 yards ENE of

Blubersdale. [R2]
