Archaeology Notes

HY31SW 7 3147 1395.

A disc (RCAHMS 1946) or saucer (Ministry of Works scheduling file) barrow, on marshy ground between the farms of Vola and Quoyer, 350 yds from the public road, on the east side of the Loch of Harray.

It is surrounded by a ditch varying between 13 and 21ft in width, on the outer edge of which is a complete ridge or bank, 102 ft diameter N-S by 85ft transversely. 'The mound rises from the inner side of the ditch to a height of about 3ft, but from the outer side it slopes down for about

3ft more, giving a total height of approx- imately 6ft.' A recent excavation in the top has revealed a single stone, much disintegrated, of irregular form and about 5 ins thick, set on edge with its axis N and S.

About 10ft NNE of the main ring is a short section of another ridge about 45ft long which may be original but may be due to drainage, as too may be the suggestion of an outer ditch. Disc barrow (R W Feachem 1963).

RCAHMS 1946, visited 10 August 1928.

This feature is at HY 3147 1395, 150yds from the public road, not 350yds as described above. The description is equally misleading.

The monument comprises a platform around the rim of which there was a bank, now represented by a slight scatter of stone, approximately of the dimensions quoted by the Commission. The platform is c.1.0m high.

At the centre of the platform is a mound, also c.1.0m high, the size of the mound (c.17.4m in diameter) suggesting a bell barrow, rather than a disc or saucer.

There is no sign of the stone on the top: the short outer bank planned by the Commission has been virtually destroyed by turf removal.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (AA) 27 May 1967.

Scheduled as Quoyer, mound.

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 25 May 1993.

The bell-shaped mound itself is 17.4m diameter, the berm 3.6m, the ditch 3-4m wide, and the exterior bank 7-8m. It is 1.0m in height.

It is sited amongst drumlins, and is visible for c.100m from any direction.
