Crois a' Chaolais (Cross of Caoles) of which burying-ground the very slightest traces still exist in a small enclosure behind a crofter's house upon the road-side, 1/2 mile SW from the former ferry at the N end of Tiree. The spot where the last interment was made (remembered by an old man only recently dead) was even pointed out in the SW corner; there are neither signs nor local tradition of a chapel, although Dr Reeves is doubtless correct in stating that one existed.(W Reeves 1854)
On the W edge of the road, directly opposite the former burying ground are two large stones embedded in the soil and between these the Cross of Caoles is said to have stood until taken away to serve in the erection of a house not far off. The top of these two stones (the socket of the cross) are now nearly level with the adjacent soil, that to the S measuring about 30" by 12" upon its exposed end.
E Beveridge 1903; W Reeves 1854.
Field Visit (24 June 1972)
According to local information, the burial ground lay at NM 0809 4870, but no trace of it survives, or of the two stones by the road. The whereabouts of the cross is unknown.
Visited by OS (D W R) 24 June 1972.
Field Visit (1974)
Chapel and Burial-ground, Caolas (Site): There are no identifiable remains of the chapel and burial ground which are said (E Beveridge 1903) to have been situated on land now occupied as a croft at Crois a' Chaolais. At NM 084 486, about 340m ESE of the croft buildings, an area of enclosed fields on each side of the road to Milton of Caolas is known locally as 'An Annaid, and is associated with cognate place-names, including a field known as 'Pairc a' Claidh' at NM 085 483. There are no visible remains.
RCAHMS 1980, visited 1974.
