(HY 3109 1426) St Mary's Kirk (NR) (In Ruins)

OS 6" map, Orkney, 2nd ed., (1903).

St Mary's Kirk, situated on a low grass-covered mound, was, by 1936, reduced to ground-level. From the vague foundations visible it appears to have measured about 40ft by 20ft overall, with walls about 4ft thick.

RCAHMS 1946.

The remains of St Mary's Kirk (name verified locally) are generally as described by the Commission.

Revised at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (NKB), 5 May 1966.

Orkney Smr Note

The site of St. Mary's Kirk, known as Marykirk, is still

visible.

The foundation has never been planned, but is roughly 36ft

long E-W and 14ft wide, with possibly an apse or chancel at E end

and doorway in W end. Only a few larger foundation stones remain.

Possibly was the site of a broch. Site broken up about 50

years ago. [R1]
