Around 1895, permission was given for the construction of the Lanarkshire and Dunbarton Railway's new lines from Glasgow Central Station to Dumbarton. The chosen route was largely in tunnel, but came to the surface to cross the River Kelvin, demolition of the predecessor bridge (NS56NE 5) being required. This was carried out in 1896, the Benalder Street Bridge being erected nearby at the expense of the railway company.
This iron bridge comprises a long single span (of open lattice-girder type) over the river, with four shorter spans (girders of solid-plate type) over the railway; cast-iron parapets were used throughout.
D Boyce 1996.
This bridge carries Benalder Street across the River Kelvin and the railway (to the North). The river here forms the boundary between the parishes of Govan (to the N) and Glasgow (to the S).
The location assigned to this record is approximately central to the structure. The available map evidence suggests that it extends from NS c. 56144 66438 to NS c. 56165 66315.
