Scope and Content Old Partick Bridge, Benalder Street, Glasgow This bridge over the river Kelvin and over the railway was opened in 1896 by the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway, a line promoted to link its Glasgow Central Railway, an underground route through central Glasgow, with the industries on the north bank of the Clyde, and of the Vale of Leven. This shows the bridge from the south-east. The span over the river is a steel lattice girder, and the three shorter spans over the railway are plate girders. Both section have the same pattern of open-work cast iron parapets, giving the structure visual unity at road level. This bridge was built to replace the original Partick Bridge, a four-span masonry structure built in the 16th century, which had to be demolished to construct the Lanarkshire & Dumbartonshire Railway. Partick Central Station had its booking office on the west side of the bridge, which is still in use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
