Activities

Field Visit (30 May 1972)

There is no knowledge of this stone at Aldie.

Visited by OS (RL) 30 May 1972.

Desk Based Assessment (1972)

(NK 0684 4130) Sculptured Stone found AD 1818 (NAT).

OS 6" map, (1959).

An inscribed stone, 33" by 18" by 9 1/2" thick, which was in the garden at Aldie (NK 06 39) in 1868. 'I can make nothing of this stone and hesitate in asserting it to be an antiquity.' (information from Capt Courtney 10 October 1868)

(On first appearance the inscription appears to be Runic, but, assuming the transcription to be accurate, few of the individual letters are either orthodox or 'twig' runes).

Name Book 1868.

Information from OS.
