Activities

Desk Based Assessment (3 July 2017)

This 3-span segmental arched bridge was built in 1817 and opened in 1818 to carry the Edinburgh to Ayr turnpike. There is a date panel and inscription at its southern end. At the time it was the only dry crossing point over the River Clyde between Lanark and Bothwell. It was partly rebuilt in 1985 and in 2002 the New Garrion Bridge (S75SE 126) was opened 45m upstream to relieve the congestion that was largely the result of the old bridge being only a single carriageway wide. The completion of the new bridge saw a one-way gyratory traffic flow introduced, with traffic from the W bank of the river using the old bridge to access the E bank, and traffic from the E using the new bridge to travel W.
