Early Medieval Carved Stones Project

Fyvie 1, Aberdeenshire, Pictish symbol stone

Measurements: H 0.68m, W 0.43m

Stone type: whinstone

Place of discovery: NJ c 766 381

Present location: built into the east gable of the chancel of Fyvie church, under the window.

Evidence for discovery: in the 1860s it was built either into the school (Stuart) or into the building opposite the school (OS). The latter is supported by the ECMS record that it was built into the front of the tailor’s shop. It was incorporated into the new chancel of the church in 1903.

Present condition: the slab had been trimmed for re-use as a building stone, and it then broke into two when it was removed. The carving is very weathered.

Description

This slab as it survives is incised with the lower part of a crescent and V-rod, above a Pictish beast facing left and beneath the beast’s head a rudimentary mirror.

Date: seventh century.
