Orkney Smr Note
On the edge of marshy ground about 100 yards to the SW of the
farmhouse of East House, there is a very large tumulus of burnt
earth and small stones which has suffered greatly due to periodic
excavations which don't appear to have been systematically carried
out. A fragment of an old gairsty dyke lying in a NW'erly
direction, adjoins the mound at its E side, but there is no trace
in the adjoining cultivated land. The mound originally appears to
have been 60ft in diameter, but most of the original outline has
been broken up so that the exact size cannot be stated accurately.
It is about 8ft in height on the W side and slightly lower on the
E.
