Hall [NAT]

OS (GIS) MasterMap, June 2010.

See also NT48SW 2.

A drill hall is depicted on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Haddingtonshire, 1901, sheet iv NE). The hall served as the headquarters of the 4th (Aberlady) Corps of the Haddingtonshire Rifle Volunteers, which had been formed in 1860. The corps was redesignated 'C' Company in 1880, and in 1906 it was added as a section to 'A' Company at Haddington. An associated rifle range lay between Craigielaw Point and Hareston Wood (see NT48SW 2).

The building is now in use as a community hall.

Information from RCAHMS (IFr), 11 December 2000.

Sir J Moncrieff Grierson 1909.

Activities

Project (March 2013 - September 2013)

A project to characterise the quantity and quality of the Scottish resource of known surviving remains of the First World War. Carried out in partnership between Historic Scotland and RCAHMS.

Note (1 November 2013)

A drill hall was constructed in 1884 according to the date stone on the front of the instructor’s house, now called Hall House, fronting the N side of Main Street (see NT47NE 108). The hall was built to the rear of the house and is annotated drill hall on the 2dn and 3rd editions of the OS 25-inch map (Haddingtonshire). The hall was gifted to the community in 1951 by the Earl of Wemyss.

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 1 November 2013.
