(NJ 4955 6822) Janet's Well (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1938)

Janet's Well is named after a lunatic woman who lived in a cave nearby.

Name Book 1866.

Jenny's Well is practically opposite Tosh's Lang Craigs. It is not known who Jenny was but, 50 years ago, the well figured in local folk-customs, associated with May Day, and pins and other small articles were placed in and around the well to propitiate her.

W Cramond 1888.

Water flows from a pipe set into an ornamental, semi-circular shaped wall 1.2m high, on top of which, set into stone and outlined with beach pebbles, is the name 'Jenny's Well'.

Visited by OS (EGC) 15 March 1962.

No change.

Visited by OS (RL) 19 July 1967.
