Activities

Field Visit (28 November 1972)

NJ44SW 9 4401 4093

At NJ 4401 4093 is a turf-covered stony mound which probably represents a denuded cairn. It measures 11.0m in diameter and 0.6m high and has its centred hollowed. The N arc is overlaid by a ruinous hill dyke.

To the SE on the S slopes of Both Hill are a few widely scattered small stony heaps which may be clearance heaps.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (AA) 28 November 1972.

Field Visit (26 March 1990)

A probable cairn, situated on the W shoulder of Both Hill, measures about 11m in diameter by 0.7m in height with its centre dug into. An old stone dyke extends across the N side of the cairn.

None of the stony heaps previously described on the SE and S flanks of Both Hill could be identified. In those areas not obscured by gorse and heather several mounds of the sort created by wind-thrown trees can be seen, and some of these may have been mistaken for small cairns.

Visited by RCAHMS (SH), 26 March 1990.
