Desk Based Assessment (19 June 2017)

Nothing is now visible of The Swing Bridge, which once crossed the entrance to the Kingston Dock. It was scrapped a year after the dock closed in 1966 and its site is now occupied by the Glasgow Riverview Apartment Complex. The bridge was built in 1867 by John Yule and Company of Hutchesontown, as stated on the name plate photographed by Professor Hume in 1966 (SC 591585). It comprised three parallel girders of wrought-iron lattice construction mounted on a turntable that was originally hydraulically powered but later converted to steam operation.
