Desk Based Assessment (19 June 2017)
Nothing is now visible of the Clyde Thread Works, which were located in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow on the NE bank of the River Clyde. The engine-house still survived in 2002 and vertical aerial photography suggests that it was demolished sometime after 2011. The works were built for J Dick and Son, thread manufactures, in 1854 and they are depicted on the 1:500 OS Town Plan of Glasgow (1858, Sheet VI.15.19). The complex included a mill measuring 37m from NW to SE by 12m transversely, an engine-house and boiler house built side-by-side, measuring overall 24m by 13m, and a long T-shaped range of weaving sheds running 70m N and S. Changes to the layout of the site in the late 19th century saw the construction of two blocks of single-storey weaving sheds for Forest, Frew and Company, power-loom cloth manufacturers. However, the earlier stone-built engine shed designed by Gildard & Macfarlane survived these changes.
