Archaeology Notes

HY21SE 33 2670 1389, 2672 1389 and 2673 1388

('A' HY 2670 1389, 'B' 2672 1389 and 'C' 2673 1388) Tumuli (NR)

OS 6" map, Orkney, 2nd ed., (1903).

These three alleged burial mounds appear to have been excavated. The top of a possible stone cist about 3ft. square is visible about the centre of the farthest west of the group. 'A'

Name Book 1880.

After visits in 1928 and 1935, the Commission classified the northernmost of the group as a Burnt Mound, 'the other two being apparently natural'. 'A'

RCAHMS 1946.

Two of these three mounds at HY 2673 1389 'B' and HY 2674 1388 'C', have been completely obliterated. The most westerly survives as a grass-covered mound 1.2m high at HY 2672 1389, adjacent to a stream. It has been mutilated by quarrying on the west side, but on the eastern slopes traces of black earth and burnt stones can be seen, suggesting that this is a burnt mound. No finds have been recorded in this area.

Re-surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (NKB) 15 September 1964.
