Archaeology Notes

NH86NW 11.07 81203 67028 and 81158 67057

Two World War II searchlight platforms which were not seen during the course of the visit in August 2000. Both lie on the Sutor Stacks and would appear to be of the standard type.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), October 2004

Activities

Note (23 July 2013)

Below the South Sutor Battery are two rock stacks each with a Second World War searchlight emplacement. The buildings appear to be complete but the access stairways are in poor condition.

From 1913 plans of the site (The National Archives WO 78/5192) and the RCAHMS aerial photographs, show an earlier First World War searchlight position on the west stack infront and below the existing searchlight building. The plans also show that the location of the First World War searchlight on the east stack is at the same location as the Second World War searchlight, suggesting that it was rebuilt. The plan also shows a power house between the two stacks.

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 23 July 2013.

Project (March 2013 - September 2013)

A project to characterise the quantity and quality of the Scottish resource of known surviving remains of the First World War. Carried out in partnership between Historic Scotland and RCAHMS.
