Early Medieval Carved Stones Project

Drainie 1, Kinneddar, Moray, Pictish symbol stone fragment

Measurements: H 0.75m, W 0.63m, D 0.10m

Stone type: sandstone

Place of discovery: NJ 2224 6960

Present location: lost.

Evidence for discovery: found when Kinneddar Manse was demolished in 1855 and ‘mutilated a squared by the masons’, before it was recognised as part of a symbol stone and taken to Elgin Museum. It was lost by 1930.The old manse stood close to the graveyard and the site of Kinneddar old parish church and early medieval foundation, then located beside a sea loch.

Present condition: all edges had been trimmed and the carving was very worn.

Description

This fragment was incised with a large crescent and V-rod. Within the crescent were double spirals.
