Stone type: granite

Place of discovery: NJ 2063 5873

Present location: in situ beside the north entrance to Birnie kirkyard.

Evidence for discovery: first recorded c 1850 built into the kirkyard wall and soon afterwards moved to stand beside the entrance.

Present condition: severely weathered.

Description

This tapering slab is incised with a standing eagle facing left, above a notched rectangle and Z-rod.

Date range: seventh century

This symbol stone of granite 3 1/2ft x 2ft x 2ft bears the eagle and Z-rod as well as a rectangular device and stands against the outside of the entrance to the churchyard.
