Surveyors working on the 1st Edition Ordnance Survey 6-inch map noted a large earth and stone mound near the summit of Doune of Craggan, a rise that commands excellent views north into Strathavon.
Further survey work by the Ordnance Survey in 1966 recorded the turf-covered mound as being about 8.5m in diameter and standing 1.2m in height. While the dimensions suggested this might be a burial cairn, the mound's position just below the summit of Doune of Craggan, and its overall appearance seem more consistent with a naturally-occurring feature rather than a man-made burial monument.

A large mound of earth and stone.
Name Book 1869.
A turf-covered cairn of stones about 8.5m in diameter and 1.2m maximum height, situated in a wood on the fairly steep southern slopes just below the summit of Doune of Craggan at about 700ft OD. The topographical position and the general appearance of the feature does not suggest a burial cairn.
Resurveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (N K B) 31 August 1966.
