Activities

Standing Building Recording (3 July 2011 - 10 March 2013)

An archaeological buildings appraisal was required due to an archaeological condition being placed on the development at Woodhall House, Edinburgh. The site is located, within an historic landscape and has fabric dating back potentially to the 16th century.

The fabric of the building that will be impacted by building work dates primarily to the late 19th century when a major refurbishment was undertaken. The entire roof structure and all the upper rooms have been altered at this time. The repointing of the exterior and the discussion on re-harling the exterior wall surfaces gave valuable insights into the structural history of the building, including and understanding of the phased alterations.

Watching Brief (18 June 2013 - 15 May 2014)

A monitored strip was carried out during construction of a new extension, garages and services in the grounds of Woodhall House. Dumped deposits were discovered which contained domestic refuse (oyster shell, coal and charcoal) and lime mortar. They are considered likely to be levelling deposits associated with renovations to Woodhall House when it was rebuilt as a late Georgian mansion. A wall revealed to the west of the house was thought to be part of an early garden wall.

Standing Building Recording (1 March 2013)

NT 19729 68348 A standing building survey was carried out on 1 March 2013 in advance of the redevelopment of the upper floor of Woodhall House and possible harling of the building. The parts of the building that will be affected primarily date to the 19th century, when a major refurbishment was undertaken. The entire roof structure and all the upper rooms underwent alteration at that time. The re-pointing of the exterior walls provided valuable insights into the structural history of the building, including the phased alterations dating to the 1550s, 1630s, 1700 and 1820s.
