(Location cited as HY 255 092). Harbour, 1879 and later. Though much altered and extended, some of the original coursed-rubble work survives. At the landward side is an 18th-century, 2-storey and attic harled warehouse, with crow-stepped gables, now converted to offices.
(Location cited as HY 255 091 to HY 255 082). Warehouses and wharves, 18th century and later. All along the waterfront at Stromness are small private wharves and piers, often with storehouses and cranes. The latter are commonly of the post type, with wooden jibs. An interesting feature is Login's Well, used for watering ships until 1931. The Stromness Museum, with numerous shipping exhibits, is worth a visit.
J R Hume 1977.
Stromness harbour has few structures and no breakwater as such. It is formed by a prolonged voe heading northwards from about HY 257 082, and is partly protected by the islands of Inner and Outer Holm on the E.
The 1998 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map notes Harbour [NAT] around HY 256 085.
