Archaeology Notes

NC96SE 102 9554 6323

A sheepfold, which is shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1987), was noted during a pre-afforestation survey of Sandside Estate. It is D-shaped on plan and measures 10m across the chord internally with an entrance at the E end of the straight wall. On the S, a second straight wall lies parallel to the first and there are entrances at both ends of this passage. The walls are well-made with dressed stone gateways. A stretch of ruined wall extends 5m to the SE of the enclosure.
