Activities

Note (14 November 2018)

Alexander Macnaughton was a farmer who set up a wool spinning mill in 1783. It was based at a small farm called Remony on the banks of the River Tay. This continued until 1835.

Alexander's grandson moved the business to Pitlochry on the banks of the Moulin Burn and set up a new wool spinning and weaving enterprise. In 1857 A and J Macnaughton started up operating the mill and a shop in the town. In the 1960s the company took over the House of Edgar in Edinburgh (wholesale fabric) which was moved to Pitlochry and a Dumfries weaver, The Isle Mill Limited which was moved to Aberdeen. The Pitlochry production was moved to Aberdeen in 1983.

In 1992, woollen weaving production of Macnaughton's The Isle Mill, Aberdeen was transferred to the Isla Bank Mills in Moray.

Macnaughtons trading names of the House of Edgar, The Isle Mill, Whitehill and Wilson's and Macnaughtons of Pitlochry were maintained.
