A Kahn-like reversal of the 'service core' principle inspired this densely clustere, castle-like outcrop, which crowns the skyline of the University's Hillhead extension area. Variegated concrete service towers congregate around the outside of the building, leaving internal areas exceptionally uncluttered. The low, massive Art Gallery, incorporating a reconstruction of Mackintosh's demolished house, was added later at the foot of the library wing. (Fig. 4.52).
